I recently spent some time in Mexico on an amazing trip hosted by Patron Tequila. We spent time in Atotonilco el Alto, a town about two hours east of Guadalajara that is known for tequila production in the highlands of Jalisco. The trip, while led by Patron, was not at all preachy to the brand, but instead allowed us to learn more about the people and the culture of where we were and to give back to the community by volunteering and helping the locals.
I named this drink after the small square within this town that was shadowed by the tallest building/church, dedicated to the archangel, Saint Michael. So much life and culture filled the plaza that was surrounded by colorful buildings and old French influenced iron railings. Vendors gathered to showcase eclectic goods from handmade crafts, to produce, to knockoff sunglasses. Local’s flooded this part of town, and it was clearly visible that the modern western idea of tourism has not reached this part of Mexico.
The inspiration for this cocktail came from the fresh produce, spirited mezcal, and cultured creativity.
Puerto de las Altos
1.5oz Verde Memento Mezcal
.75oz Pineapple Juice
.75oz Guava Juice
.75oz Avocado Puree*
3 dashes Fee Brothers Cardamom Bitters
Garnish: Avocado Pit, Guajillo & Alaea Salt Rim, Pineapple Leaf
Vigorously shake all ingredients and strain into a prepared rimmed nick and nora glass with the avocado pit already in the glass. Garnish with the pineapple leaf and enjoy!
*Avocado Pureé – Blend one whole avocado, 100ml of fresh lime juice, and a teaspoon of sea salt.
